Alleviating Flight Sickness

If you are a frequent flier, you will almost certainly have had the misfortune of experiencing what is called in French la maladie de vol , or flight sickness. This feeling of nausea, similar to car sickness, is a real problem for many people and can make the business of flying very unpleasant.

Sufferers of flight sickness will, however, be pleased to know that there are ways and means of treating the problem, and each of these is natural. To begin with, experts recommend that fliers start their flight with half a nutmeg under the tongue.

Nutmeg has a calming effect and placed beneath the tongue it can be speedily absorbed into the blood stream. In addition, queasy travellers are encouraged to sip a ginger based drink, such as tea or ginger ale. Ginger has ant-nausea properties and can help to reorder an unsettled system.

Before flying, it is a good idea to eat a meal that is low in carbohydrates and sugars. These can cause adrenaline spikes which create similar surges of nausea. Meat and cheese is a recommended pre-takeoff meal as it will help to stabilise the stomach during flight.

Finally, sufferers of flight sickness should attempt to book seats next to a window. Being able to see out of the aircraft will reduce sensations of claustrophobia and may help to ease the nausea. Similarly, ensure that the air vents are pointing at you to maximise available oxygen.
